Tokyo: Herbivorous Men
A few mornings before our weekend trip to Tokyo, I was standing in the lobby bar of the Comfort Inn and an interesting segment came on CNN. "Herbivorous Men", an interesting new generation of men in Japan. I guess in North America we'd simply call them girl men, but like most other things, the Japanese have really taken it to a next level. Taken straight out of that article:
In Japan, sex is translated as 'relationship in flesh,'" she said, "so I named those boys 'herbivorous boys' since they are not interested in flesh." Typically, "herbivore men" are in their 20s and 30s, and believe that friendship without sex can exist between men and women.
Hopefully that explains it well because I would not be able to explain it any other way. Anyways, my point being, is that Duncan and I became fascinated with spotting these men in Japan. Hopefully we got the right idea.
Spotted: a young "herb" in the Harajuku neighbourhood.

In Beijing, men carry their girlfriends purses, but in Tokyo they did not carry girls purses because they were too busy carrying their own! As you can notice, his hair is quite nicely highlighted. (PS. I'm not just pointing out guys who are gay and trying to pass them off as herbivorous!)

Long, highlighted hair. An easy way to spot a "herb". It adds to his girly-ness.

More "herbs" in the Roppongi subway station. The one leaning against the pole, in the green shirt, is wearing an outfit which would probably look better on me. I'm not sure if he quite fits the definition of a "herb". But he fits this description of being: "fragile, do not have a stocky body -- skinny."

Easily spotted in the middle of the busiest crosswalk ever, Shibuya, a crew of young "herbs". (If you missed it, they are at the bottom of the picture)

I don't know about these guys, maybe they are herbivorous or just an act? But really, Glitter? Who are you? I'm pretty sure you just pay to chill with them for the night ie. go out drinking and party. There are many of these in Shinjuku, it seems to be offered to both boys and girls. I searched it and maybe they are called "Host Clubs"-- it seems to fit the scene. Anyways, the point being, they could fit the category of herbivorous because they were more fashionable than the average girl.

Back to the traditional "herbs". It could be possible that I only spotted them on the basis that they were skinny, with skinny jeans, and man-purses. Anyways, I hope you got the point.
